I am a proud Kamilaroi woman from north/west NSW, although I have lived in Canberra for most of my life. I began school in Canberra, my working career and still live here with my partner, children and my 4 grandchildren.
I studied mental health through the 1990’s and received a Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health). This led me to working in various community settings particularly in Aboriginal mental health.
Before retiring from full-time employment, I worked in the Australian Public Service mainly as the Indigenous Liaison Officer with the Australian Public Service Commission. In this role I provided culturally sensitive support and advisory services to Indigenous APS employees I also worked closely with other APS departments to provide advice and guidance on issues around Indigenous employment.
Since retirement from the APS, 10 years ago, I have been fortunate enough to facilitate Mental Health First Aid training in rural and remote communities across Australia. This training provides a cultural lens to mental health and gives practical information about recognising and supporting people with mental health issues.
